I love to display an American flag at our house. Mine had gotten a little tattered and faded so I took it down and bought a new one. I put it on our flag pole this morning – it looks so crisp and wonderful flying in the breeze. I looked around the neighborhood and saw several other American flags on display. That’s because this past week has been National Veterans Awareness Week and today is Veterans Day. Steve’s a veteran. I’m a veteran too. We both served nearly 9 years in the US Army including during Desert Storm but (thankfully) didn’t have to go overseas to fight. We have a lot of veterans in our family – seems like it’s kind of a tradition.Â
Steve, Violet and I went to the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Joplin this morning. April & Jon marched in the parade and played a mini-concert at Memorial Hall afterward where the Joplin American Legion held a memorial ceremony honoring veterans of all wars. The number of veterans from WWI and WWII is dwindling but there were quite a few veterans from more recent wars. Many were wearing their uniform or their medals as they were asked to do by the Veterans Affairs secretary. Wearing the medals, he said, “will demonstrate the deep pride our veterans have in their military service and bring Veterans Day home to all American citizens.â€
Mine and Steve’s medals are in a storage box up in the attic (and you know about my attic) so we didn’t wear them today. I did wear my Army Service lapel pin and some other patriotic pins that I have. So here’s my website showing some pride and wearing my rack…
