On The Day Of Your Departure
At last that dreaded day has come
For you to march away from home.
Off to war far across the sea,
You’ll fight for freedom and democracy.Â
We at home won’t face that fight
But will pace the floor in dark of night.
We can’t protect you - that tears us apart,
You cannot imagine the fear in our heart.
Your wife and child are crying now,
Sad, scared, and wondering how
They’ll make it through a year-long wait
To greet you, safe at airport gate.
May God keep you safe and sound
Until you’re back on familiar ground.
I pray you’ll come back safe and whole
Of body, mind, and soul.
