Yea! The internet is back!

We’ve had a heck of an ice storm here in Joplin. You might have seen something about it on the news. Several inches of ice are currently coating the roads. Sadly, the ice is also coating the trees and breaking off limbs which then fall on the ice coated electrical lines breaking them too.

Ice-bound kids

We’re one of the lucky ones though. Our power went out on Sunday for a short time but came back on. It’s flickered off and back on a few times since then but so far (keep your fingers crossed) we’re not living in the dark. Most of our neighborhood hasn’t had power since Sunday. That includes our next door neighbors - the power outage started with Donna’s house next door and continued down the street and around the block. How’s that for luck! Amber’s apartment building hasn’t had power since Sunday either. Amber and her 2 roommates, Jamie and Adree, are staying with us. Adree’s 2 brothers are staying with us too since their house has no electricity or heat and it’s freakin’ cold outside!

I haven’t been complaining too much about the cable (and the internet) being out for 3 days. At least we’ve had electricity and heat. It would have been kind of bad to complain about no tv when people have no heat wouldn’t it? But now it’s back! {{{{I love you internet!!}}}}

More ice-bound kids

I will tell you that I am out of practice cooking for such a large group. Breakfast, lunch and dinner for 11 is challenging me. Especially since most of the grocery stores have been closed due to no electricity and the ones that are open have mostly empty shelves now.

Why is it that things like this always happen on the day after you should have gone grocery shopping but didn’t because you hate grocery shopping so much that you’re always procrastinating until there is nothing left in the house except 2 crusts of bread and a shriveled orange?

The college (MSSU), the high school and the elementary school are closed. No electricity. The word is that the schools may be closed for at least another week. Joy! We have already used up the 4 snow days that were included in the schedule so the school board is talking about canceling Spring break to make up the days.

We’re all going a little stir crazy so maybe tomorrow we’ll pack up the donkeys and hike to the nearest open shopping center. I could use a new book - and some solitude and peace and quiet too.

Keep warm!
