Ok, these stories are completely out of order. All I can tell you is I can only write what I’m thinking about. Today I was taking the pictures and mirror down off the walls in the front entry so that I can prep to re-paint. The front entry mirror is a combination mirror/coat rack so I had to use Steve’s drill to get it down. He’s got it screwed in so that it can handle the weight of all the coats and purses that get hung on it. As I was taking our familiar yellow and black drill out of it’s case, I suddenly had a flashback to Vicki’s birthday and had to giggle a little.

Vicki’s 20th birthday was on July 22nd. We had Vicki’s birthday dinner celebration the night before (Saturday night) since that was my parents’ last night in town. It was a typical birthday celebration at our house. Dinner, cake and birthday song singing…
Vicki's Birthday dinner

Happy Birthday to you..

Followed by gift opening.

Let me tell you a little about gift-giving in our house. Requests for an iPod or Wii will probably have Steve and I rolling our eyes. Ask for something practical and you’ll probably get it. Ask for tools and Steve will be giddy with excitement and rush off to the store immediately to get whatever you’ve asked for. That’s how it went with Vicki’s birthday this year because she asked for a cordless drill.

A girls gotta love a power drill

Now there are plenty of cordless drills out there but only one as far as Steve is concerned. It comes in a plain black case with the word DeWalt emblazoned on it. “We can’t get Vic a wimpy power drill. *grunt*grunt* More Power! *grunt*grunt* This one will last a lifetime. And it has a hammer drill function, you know in case she needs to drill into concrete.”

Accessories? Who knew drills had accessories!?!

And of course what good is a drill without accessories? Drill bits and screwdriver thingies are must haves.

Dad shows off drill features

After all the gift opening, Steve took Vicki out to the garage to learn how to use the drill. As she practiced drilling holes in a piece of scrap wood, Steve filled her in on caring for the drill and power tool safety. I caught a few snatches of their conversation over the sounds of the drill and I could have sworn I heard him say “… always put it away in it’s case and store it somewhere safe. And be careful who you loan it to, because most guys are only after one thing…”
