Ok - I’m trying to get ahead of the power curve here so that my brother John doesn’t whine that I’ve posted too late for them to play along. Especially since today involves drinking wine.
The third day of Christmas is Dec 27th and is the Feast of St. John. St. John is the disciple whom Jesus loved best and to whom he entrusted the care of his mother, Mary, after his death. There is a legend that John drank poisoned wine and wasn’t harmed because he had blessed the wine before drinking it.
So, go make up a batch of mulled wine. Here’s a recipe:
Mulled Wine
Ingredients:
1 bottle Red Wine
2 whole Cloves
2 - 2 inch sticks of Cinnamon
1 Cardamon Seed
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
Boil the spices in the wine in a large saucepan for about five minutes. Strain the wine.
Pour the hot wine into a goblet and bless it. Pass the wine around the table. As the cup of wine is passed, the giver says “Drink to the love of St. John” and the recipient answers “For where love is, there is God”.
FYI, the more mulled wine you consume the more love you will feel.
