Pe(s)ts
My daughter Amber is nearly 24 years old and has never lived alone. For most of those 24 years she hasn’t even slept in a room alone, sharing a room first with her sister and then later with her college roommate Jamie. In fact, she and Jamie shared a no-bedroom studio that was smaller than my bathroom for over 2 years. They were very close friends.
I can imagine how lonely and quiet her new apartment must be. All alone in a new city. It’s driven her to acquire a pet.
I was sure she would have gotten a cat. Nope - cat food. She got 2 white mice. Mice. Rodents. Those aren’t pets - they’re pests.
Eventually Amber hopes to get a cat so I’m thinking the mice might actually be a good choice because once she can afford a cat, the mice can be dinner. Amber doesn’t think that’s funny. She doesn’t think April’s funny either…
April says: Dad says Walmart makes these mouse toys…
Amber says:What kind of toys?
April says:and you put some cheese on them and then they go SNAP!
Amber says:harharhar
April says:peanutbutter works too
Amber says:lol
Amber says:Well, Dasha and Foxy aren’t getting snapped
Amber says:unless they get free
Amber says:which is unlikely in a wire cage

LOL
A few things:
1.) It was Ilya’s Idea, though I wasn’t really against it. I wanted a pet, but a cat just isn’t possible right now. I thought about a rat, but I guess they get really REALLY clingy. Like, dog clingy.
2.) They aren’t any ickier than any other domesticated pet. Hell, people breed them for mouse shows. MOUSE shows! I couldn’t believe it, either. http://www.afrma.org/fancyrm.htm#fmice
3.) They aren’t actually white. Dasha is black and white, and Foxy is yellow. I think this helps with the cuteness, because the white ones just scream “Feed me to a snake!!!” to me. And they kinda creep me out. With those creepy pink eyes.
I understand if you guys are creeped out. Mice aren’t for everyone. But I think they’re cute. So tiny!

All I can think is that it will pee on my hand…because that always happens

Well, they do pee when they’re terrified. I’m slowly training them to be okay when they are held. Everything I read says it takes a little bit if you get them as adults. But they are already getting better about me holding them than they were a few days ago.

So you had pee hands for a few days or so then? Eww

No. Poo hands. They poo far more than pee. I used a lot of soap.

Yes - lots and lots of soap, please.
